Briefs: 'One-stop shop' in Stillwater for wedding plans

The St. Croix Valley Wedding Showcase will be held at Washington County Historic Courthouse on Feb. 22 from noon to 3 p.m. The courthouse is at 3rd and Pine streets in Stillwater.

The event provides one-stop shopping for food catering, cakes, wedding attire, live music, flowers, photography, stationery, jewelry, decor, photo booths, limo service, bar service, venues, gown preservation and more.

Tickets are $7 at the door. The event is a fundraiser for restoration of the historic courthouse.

The Washington County Workforce Investment Board is seeking a youth member, age 16 to 21, to become part of its youth advisory council. Members represent business, organized labor, and public agencies.

The Washington County Board recently made several appointments to county advisory groups. They are:

• Richard Glasgow, Lakeland, appointed to the Veteran's Rest Camp Association, Inc., for a term ending Dec. 31, 2016. The association operates property owned by the Veteran's Rest Camp in northern Washington County.

• Pamela Skinner, Oakdale, appointed to the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District for three years, ending Feb. 23, 2018.

• Tony Jurgens, Cottage Grove, appointed as a District 4 representative to the Library Board to a term ending Dec. 31, 2017.

• James Widen, Woodbury, appointed to the Housing and Redevelopment Authority Board of Commissioners, as a District 5 representative, to a term ending Dec. 31, 2017.

The Youth Service Bureau has received a $25,000 grant from 3M to support its parent education program.

The bureau will offer parents practical support on topics ranging from social media and how kids use it, to more traditional mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression and grief.

Support from 3M comes in addition to funding received from the Lee S. and Dorothy N. Whitson Fund, the Kay Clint Fund, Stillwater Noontime Rotary and other community partners.

The Washington County Board received an update Jan. 27 on this year's services and plans for the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District from Stephen Manweiler, the district's executive director.

The district's levy across the seven-county metropolitan area for 2015 will be $16.7 million, with $1.5 million levied from Washington County taxpayers.

The district's 2015 budget amounts to $18.8 million.

The district is governed by a board of 18 elected county commissioners. Washington County commissioners Fran Miron, District 1, and Gary Kriesel, District 3, serve on the board.

An additional Sheriff's Office deputy soon will provide police protection services in Hugo.

In December, the Hugo City Council requested that an additional deputy be assigned to its city. The city pays the county for the cost of the service.

Several Washington County cities such as Hugo contract with the county Sheriff's Office for policing services.

The Washington County Board acknowledged an application Jan. 27 from the St. Croix Preparatory Academy to permit legal gambling at two raffles this spring.

The academy, on Stagecoach Trail in Baytown Township, plans to conduct raffles on March 28 and April 18 at the school.
