Briefs: Lakeville's Brew Battle boasts 100-plus craft beers

Brew Battle, a competitive tasting featuring more than 100 craft and imported beers, is on tap for Lakeville.

More than 30 breweries will have their brews at the event, which will be held 1 to 4 p.m. July 12 at the Lakeville Area Arts Center. This is a Pan-O-Prog button event and is sponsored by Lakeville Liquors and Pan-O-Prog.

Tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and participants must be 21 or older. The winning brew will be chosen by attendees. Tickets can be purchased online at www.lakevillemn.gov. All proceeds benefit the Lakeville Heritage Center and Pan-O-Prog. For more information, call 952-985-4400.

Construction of the first multilane roundabout in Dakota County was approved last week for Lakeville.

County commissioners awarded a $6.9 million contract to build the roundabout as part of the reconstruction of the intersection between County Road 50 and County Road 60 in Lakeville.

The contract goes to Park Construction Co. The work will involve reconstruction of County Road 50 as a four-lane divided highway from County Road 60 to Jubilee Way and the reconstruction of County Road 60 as a four-lane divided highway from Orchard Trail to Jaeger Path.

The two roads intersect now at a crossroads controlled by traffic signals. The roundabout will replace the signals.

Both County Roads 50 and 60 will be closed near the intersection from May 4 to Aug. 28, 2015.

The county is offering the contractor the possibility of earning two bonuses, one for $150,000 if the roads are reopened by Aug. 13 and up to $40,000 for constructing pavement of a quality that extends the life of the road.

Dakota County Transportation Director Mark Krebsbach said the intersection now carries 34,000 vehicles a day and backups occur in all directions behind the traffic signals. He said the roundabout is expected to increase safety and reduce delays.

South St. Paul Eagle Scout candidate Scott Bjorklund is collecting photos of South St. Paul for his Eagle Scout project.

He is looking for photos of South St. Paul buildings, streetscapes, celebrations, parks, families and people from 1887 to 2000. The photos can be donated or scanned and returned.

Photos will be collected until August 15. This fall, they will be shown to the community in a presentation. Any donated photos will then be passed on to the Dakota County Historical Society for safekeeping.

The Burnsville City Council last week approved a design for the expansion of the Heart of the City parking deck, constructed in 2008. An additional 40 stalls are to be added to the parking garage.

There will also be facade improvements and landscaping under a budget of $1.4 million.

The city will call for competing bids to expand the garage, and hopes to get most of the work done this year.
