Briefs: Home Remodeling Fair at Burnsville High School

People interested in fixing up their homes can get tips and meet with vendors at the Burnsville Home Remodeling Fair on Saturday.

The free event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. is at Burnsville High School, 600 E. Hwy. 13. It will include vendors and information about do-it-yourself projects, including landscaping, electrical work, flooring, cabinetry, roofing and siding, basement remodels, bathroom updates and security systems.

Walking promotion begins another seasonSimple Steps, the Dakota County program that encourages healthy habits through regular walking, is kicking off another season.

Registration is open through June 15 for groups of two to 12 people. Those who walk regularly through July 31 will be eligible for prizes, such as a Simple Steps reflective arm bands, baseball caps, lunch bags and gift cards.

Since it started in 2007, Simple Steps has recorded almost 4,000 people walking for more than 12 million minutes.

Participants can get a Simple Steps Starter Kit online to get tips, maps of interesting places to walk around Dakota County and a guide to assessing the "walkability" of their neighborhoods.

Simple Steps staff also will be at the Celebrate Earth Day event at Lebanon Hills Visitor Center, 860 Cliff Road in Eagan, from noon to 3 p.m. April 22. They will offer a drawing for T-shirts and other prizes.

Sign up soon for Run for HopeValley Natural Foods is hosting its second annual Run for Hope 5K next month. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, after last year's attracted more than 170 participants and raised $5,500 for Hope for Tomorrow Mentoring, a youth organization working in the Burnsville, Apple Valley, Eagan, Lakeville, Bloomington and White Bear Lake schools. More than 70 business leaders mentor students each month.

The event starts at 8 a.m. at the food store, 13750 County Road 11, Burnsville, and ends with a pancake and egg breakfast for participants.

Funds are to be used to support the start-up of new chapters, develop new curriculum, upgrade the website and help hire an executive director.

It's open to all ages, but kids under 18 need signed permission. Registration is $28.25 and needs to happen before April 20 to be sure of the right size T-shirt. To register or sponsor a runner, visit www.runforhope5k.com.

Police Department plan bicycle sale SaturdayThe Rosemount Police Department is planning its annual sale of unclaimed bicycles and other items from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Rosemount City Hall, 2875 W. 145th St.

The inventory includes 67 bikes of various sizes, all priced under $40.

A boombox, compact disc wallets, two car stereos, a tool kit, backpacks and bags also will be sold.
