Summer recreation registration opens

Registration opened Tuesday for Summer 2015 Park & Recreation activities for children in Shakopee.

Programs include "Weekday Wing-Dings," "Arrowheads Archery," "T-ball and Nearball," athletic camps and swimming lessons. More information can be found in the brochure that was sent to city residents or at parksandrec.shakopeemn.gov.

The Shakopee Skate Park has also opened for the season and is open daily during Community Center hours. Users must go to the front desk for a free wristband.

However, residents are advised not to walk or run on the city's athletic fields until the ground thaws and grass starts growing.

Hunt for Easter eggs at Community Center

The annual Easter egg hunt will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Shakopee Community Center, 1255 Fuller St. S.

The free event includes games, activities and treats.

Hear about plans for Community Center

The City Council will learn about options for a Community Center renovation when a feasibility study is presented at a workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Possibilities include making repairs to the existing ice arena, adding a second sheet of ice at that location or building a new two-rink facility at another location. If a new arena is built, the shell of the existing arena could be used for other purposes, such as an indoor pool and an expanded fitness center.

Library hosts acoustic concert

Local pop singer and songwriter Chris Koza will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Shakopee Library, 235 Lewis St. S.

Koza, who recently opened for Ingrid Michaelson, will perform a solo acoustic show. Songs by his band, Rogue Valley, were featured in the movie, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," and on MTV's "The Jersey Shore."

The event, part of the "Booked: Live Bands at Your Library" series, is free. Space is limited. Tickets will be handed out starting at 6 p.m.

SAVAGE

Student launches 'Service Saturday'

Residents of Savage are invited to participate in the city's first Service Saturday on April 18.

The event, created by high school student Shrey Pothini in partnership with the city, is a day when service projects are done at various locations in the city.

Examples of projects could be organizing a neighborhood food drive to benefit a local food shelf, gathering friends to write letters to U.S. troops or picking up trash at a local park. Projects could be hosted by businesses or organizations.

All participants will receive a wristband to wear on Service Saturday.

Pothini is the founder of the Harriet Bishop Community Service Club. Earlier this year, he won a $25,000 State Farm grant to establish similar service clubs in schools throughout the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District.

"The hope is that this day encourages city residents to use their time, talents or treasures to help others," Pothini wrote in proposing the idea to the city.

Downtown gardens need caretakers

Volunteers are needed to care for two new gardens in downtown Savage.

The perennial gardens, which are at each end of the public parking lot near the Savage Depot, were created after Hwy. 13 accesses at Princeton and Ottawa avenues were closed.

The gardens are part of the city's Adopt a Garden program and need caretakers to maintain them during the growing season.

For more information, call 952-224-3400 or e-mail comments@ci.savage.mn.us.
