Briefs: Breakfast highlights power of Scott County agriculture

The importance of farming in Scott County will be stressed when a farmer's breakfast is offered on Sept. 13.

The meal is in conjunction with an Autumn Fare that Saturday at the Scott County Fairgrounds.

The breakfast itself is from 8 to 11 a.m. It is billed as a locally sourced gourmet breakfast including burritos, baked oatmeal, yogurt parfait, kolaches, fruit and coffee.

The breakfast is sponsored by Local Harvest Alliance, which promotes the importance of food production in the county.

It's "an opportunity for area residents to sample the tasty and healthy foods that are produced or sourced here," said Ann Houghton, a member of the alliance and a commercial producer of onions and garlic.

The Scott County Agricultural Society created Autumn Fare to help promote locally produced food, natural fiber and art.

The goal is a venue for producers of local food and natural fiber, plus artists, to show their work.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.twincitieslocalfood.com, or in person as Wozupi Farmers Market, Prior Lake; Cedar Summit Farm Store, New Prague, and Scott County Farm Extension, Jordan.

Burnsville is seeking judges for the Nov. 4 general election.

Election judges get $9 per hour, including training. To qualify, you must:

• Be at least 18 and eligible to vote in Minnesota.

• Be able to read, write and speak English.

• Be unrelated to another election judge in the same precinct who works at the same time.

You may not be a candidate on the ballot at that location or closely related to one.

The city is encouraging residents who are bilingual in Somali, Spanish or Russian to apply.

Judges will dedicate two to three hours for training, and 15 to 17 hours on election day. With advance notice, employers must allow workers time off to serve as election judges.

An application and skills test must be completed by Sept. 12. Both are available online.

A free autumn gathering is coming up in October in Prior Lake.

Family fun includes music, horse-drawn wagon rides, crafts, kettle corn, cider, hot chocolate, music, pony rides, and inflatables.

The gathering is on Oct. 11 from 1-3 p.m. at Lakefront Park, 5000 Kop Pkwy.

Lessons on archery, canoeing and paddle boarding are coming up at regional parks across the south metro in early September.

There is a 20 percent discount for groups of four or more. It's for age 8 and up.

On Sept. 11, from 5-7 p.m., at Cleary Lake, learn how to enter and leave a canoe and how to paddle.

Equipment is provided; there's a fee of $15. Reservations are required.

Two lessons in this sport are coming up.

One is Sept. 12, from 2-4 p.m., at Cleary Lake Regional Park. The other is Sept. 13, from 9-11 a.m., at the same park.
