Camping after the first few frosts has some unbelievable advantages, first, there's just less of everything that bugs me, especially bugs, secondly, and not to be anti social, all the summer season campers, have pack't it in.
Camping trips this time of year bring the thickest wool shirts and the toughest leather boots crowd out of the indoors. We camp, but the camping is almost camouflaged in with our hunting or trapping.
We pretty much knows where were going; we have our favorite fall haunts. Two spots are just for ducks, another one is a deep woods piece of grouse cover and if it doesn't freeze up to quick we have a beaver trapping, down a remote river trip that is second to none for its being known as sandy, with long sand bars to set up tents in hurry at night.
We each bring a thick sleeping bag and we have heavy wool gloves, hats, shirts, pants and socks because they work, even when wet, and we have been getting soaked since we were kids. On those summer camping trips I can get dripping wet in no time, I don't sweat in the fall, I just shift my clothes all day and even some cooler nights to keep the warm, where its supposed to be.
The four of us pack one axe, one canvas tent, one stove, one coffeepot, and one skillet, one of almost everything, because one of us, has to portage or carry it. The same old year after year camps, never get the furniture we've hand crafted over the years moved or dusted. We just move in, fix any broken tent poles, add some firewood and were home for the weekend.
We see lots of stars, we smell all kinds of wood smoke, we get to sleep early and we get up early, because its cold and critters that disappeared all summer now seem to be everywhere and on the move. Fur coats on the forested beasts from whitetail deer to weasels all look about as good as our two toned red and black wool outfits.
You never had a better tasting sandwich in the fall, I don't care if its only bologna or peanut butter, when you finally get around to eating whatever the daily dinner or breakfast grub is, it's the best and I've had some burned pancakes in my time that rival any in the kitchen at home burned toast. This time of year hot coffee takes on an entirely different meaning and you never had fresher air for breathing. I'll be breathing plenty this next weekend. The trout whisperer
