Brawl aboard St. Croix 'Booty Cruise' leads to citations for 5 women

A radio promotion cruise for 500 women on the St. Croix River ended on an ugly note Thursday night when a brawl broke out.

Police found several women fighting on a riverboat in Stillwater after a KDWB "Booty Cruise" ended, said Sgt. Jeff Stender of the city's Police Department.

Five of them, all in their 20s, were cited for disorderly conduct, he said.

An employee on the boat, a 26-year-old woman from Stillwater, was hurt when she attempted to break up the fights.

"The employee stated she observed multiple people fighting," Stender said.

The "Booty Cruise" is a promotion that involves KDWB personality Dave Ryan, who gives tickets away on his show, said station operations manager Rob Morris. KDWB has security officers on the cruises, which include some male performers and staff.

"I don't know how you can prevent people from getting in a fight with one another over things they say," he said.

Stender said the KDWB cruises have been quieter in recent years after police met with the station's marketing representatives over concerns about disorderly conduct. Large gatherings of people present challenges when they've consumed too much alcohol before, during and after river cruises, Stender said.

Five Stillwater police officers responded to the brawl, which involved several women pushing, hitting and knocking one another down. So did Laura Eastman, Bayport's police chief, an officer from Oak Park Heights, and two Washington County sheriff deputies.

Another "Booty Cruise" is scheduled for July 22 and a third for Sept. 16.
