A 9-year-old boy has died from an apparent drowning in a North Mankato municipal pool, authorities said Sunday.

The incident occurred Saturday at the Spring Lake Park Swim Facility. City officials identified the boy as Abdirahman Abdullahi, of North Mankato.

"Staff responded immediately and appropriately to the incident, using their training to render aid to the boy and ensure the safety of other guests," said city spokeswoman Katie Heintz.

The pool, which is staffed by lifeguards, remained closed Sunday "out of an abundance of caution [in order] to complete a review of the incident."
