A 10-year-old boy crashed while operating an ATV behind his family's central Minnesota home and died, authorities said Wednesday.

Gavin E. Sutton, whose home is northwest of Swanville, was riding the four-wheeler when it rolled over in a wooded area on his family's property Sunday afternoon, according to Todd County Sheriff Peter Mikkelson.

The boy died the next day at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Mikkelson said the law allows for a child Gavin's age to be legally operating an ATV on private property.

He described the boy as "experienced on this vehicle," adding that he was wearing a helmet at the time and was traveling "at a slow rate of speed."

"Apparently, he was being monitored" by family members who were nearby cutting wood at the time of the crash, the sheriff said.
