MANKATO -- Fourth-string quarterback Rhett Bomar practiced today and will not be released because of his arrest early Sunday morning for alleged third-degree drunken driving, coach Leslie Frazier said this morning.
"It's not something that we're pleased about," Frazier said. "We feel like we'll be able to handle it internally and get some things done in regards to him. He's a guy, like so many, has to hopefully learn from a mistake and move forward. He addressed our team and talked about the direction he'd like to be able to go, and apologized for any negativity he brought on the team and the organization.
"It's something that's disappointing, but hopefully something we'll all learn from as a group."
Frazier was asked what it feels like as an NFL coach to get the call that a player has gotten in trouble.
"This is just something you got to deal with," Frazier said. "This is part of what we do. When you're dealing with young guys the age group they're in, things are going to happen. You got to deal with each situation individually. You try not to lump everybody into the same category. You want to deal with each situation as it comes. I'm not naive enough to believe there aren't going to be other situations. I know there's going to be others. You just have to deal with them on an individual basis."
Frazier said it was Bomar's idea to address the team.
Bomar did not talk to reporters after practice.
Meanwhile, Frazier also has two new injuries that he's having to deal with. Tyrell Johnson, who is locked in a battle with Jamarca Sanford for the starting free safety job, "tweaked" a hamstring, according to Frazier, in Saturday night's practice and did not practice today. Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe also "tweaked" his hamstring, according to Frazier, while catching a pass in team two-minute drills this morning.
