The body of a 21-year-old Coon Rapids man who went into the St. Croix River over the Memorial Day weekend to rescue a young nephew was recovered Friday, authorities said.
The body of Tou Hu Vang was found about 9:50 a.m. just south of Osceola Landing, according to the Chisago County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office was assisted in the recovery by the National Park Service and the Taylors Falls Fire Department.
On Sunday, 11-year-old Calvin Yang was pulled into the swirling river near Taylors Falls. Vang raced into the water after the boy, but he was quickly caught in the fast current and disappeared.
Another man the family did not know also ran into the river, rescued the boy and got to shore safely.
The tragedy was one of two that played out that weekend on fast-running rivers. Late Sunday, the body of a 14-year-old boy was recovered from the Mississippi River near Lions Levee Park in St. Paul Park a few hours after he disappeared while wading with his girlfriend. The victim was identified as Dylan Thorp, a student at Oltman Middle School in St. Paul Park.
