Body found in burned car in rural Rice County

Rice County authorities are hoping an autopsy will help them identify a body found early Sunday in a burned vehicle in Cannon City Township.

The Sheriff's Office and the Faribault Fire Department were called to W. 150th Street and Alcorn Trail at about 5:20 a.m. When they arrived, they found a body inside the vehicle, said Blaine Smith, an investigator with the Rice County Sheriff's Office.

It was not immediately known whether the victim was a man or a woman, Smith said.

The Minnesota Regional Medical Examiners Office will conduct an autopsy. The Rice County Sheriff and Minnesota State Fire Marshal's office are investigating.
