A memorial service for former Minneapolis City Council Member and Hennepin County Commissioner Bob Janes will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Harborside Convention Center in Fort Myers, Fla. Janes, 78, died of a heart attack March 10 at his home in Sanibel, Fla.

Janes was elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 1961. He joined the Hennepin County Board and was its chairman from January 1965 to April 1969.

After serving as deputy director of the White House Intergovernmental Affairs office, where he worked as liaison between the White House and state, county and city governments, and a stint with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C., he moved to Sanibel in 1975. He served on the Sanibel City Council for eight years and as mayor for three years, on the Sanibel Planning Commission from 1986 to 1992, and most recently was on the Lee County Board from 2000 to 2010.
