Avett Brothers bassist Bob Crawford is from Greenville, N.C. So it's no surprise that the alt-country musicmaker, whose group played a sold-out concert Friday at First Avenue in Minneapolis, recommends a book about the South -- "The Road to Guilford Courthouse -- the American Revolution in the Carolinas" by John Buchanan.

CHRIS RIEMENSCHNEIDER

"It's about the Revolutionary War in the South. It is the greatest book I've ever read, hands down. The characters come alive, the prose is funny, happy, sad. It makes history not a chore to read. You get really connected to the characters. People's view of the Revolutionary War on an elementary level is just Washington crossing the Delaware and then it ends at Yorktown, but this book lays out a good case that the war was actually won in the South, and in the South, it was a civil war."
