Seven trash haulers that once worked independently in Bloomington are forming a consortium to consolidate garbage collection in the city and have submitted their proposal.
Bloomington is considering "organized collection," a system in which only one entity would have the contract to haul trash in the city. Currently, individual homeowners can sign a contract with any of the licensed haulers. The new system would mean fewer garbage trucks on the streets and standardized neighborhood pickup schedules.
On Monday, the haulers submitted their final proposal to the city, which could accept a negotiated deal or open the process up for other bids, said City Manager Jamie Verbrugge. The City Council also could opt to leave the current system in place. The city is seeking public comment on the trash situation at an open house April 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the public works building, 1700 W. 98th St.
