Blake, Benilde soccer play to draw in first meeting

Perhaps no two girls' soccer teams have been more evenly matched over the past two seasons than Blake and Benilde-St. Margaret's.

The teams have played each other in the past two Class 1A state championship games, with each winning once — Blake in 2011, Benilde-St. Margaret's in 2012 — by a single goal.

They squared off in a big early-season match on Aug. 27 that featured plenty of top-notch soccer but absolutely nothing decided.

Benilde-St. Margaret's took a 1-0 lead early in the first half on a goal by Jordan Maddeus and it appeared that goal might hold up.

Blake rallied late, however, and got the equalizer with 7 minutes, 25 seconds left in regulation when Jess Horrick scored her first goal of the season on a feed from Lydia Sutton. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Stay tuned. This rivalry is far from over.

Edina's 21-19 loss at Blaine on Thursday night is further proof of just how important a role turnovers play in a football game.

Edina had a shot late in the game, scoring 13 fourth-quarter points, but Peterson was stopped short of the end zone on a two-point conversion try with three minutes to go in the game.

The Benilde-St. Margaret's boys' soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the Class 1A preseason coaches poll, bounced back from an uncharacteristic performance in a 4-3 loss to Breck. The Red Knights, who had not given up that many goals in any game since 2009, played a much crisper game in a 1-0 victory over Eden Prairie, which was ranked No. 8 in Class 2A.
