Bjugstad named WCHA's Rookie of the Week

Nick Bjugstad is the seventh different Gopher to earn a weekly award from the WCHA this season.

Nick Bjugstad, a 6-4 freshman center for the Gophers, has been named the WCHA's Rookie of the Week.

He scored two short-handed goals in the third period and had one assist last Friday as the Gophers beat Michigan Tech 5-2. The last Gopher to have two shorties in one game was Tony Lucia in a 5-1 victory over Alaska Ancorage on Oct. 30, 2009.

Bjugstad has 11 points -- three goals and eight assists -- in 12 games since competing in the World Junior Championships for the U.S. team over the holidays.

He has 15 points altogether (five goals, 10 assists).

HUSKIES' ROE HONORED

Senior center Garrett Roe was named the WCHA's offensive player of the week. He had four goals, including two game-winners as St. Cloud State swept Wisconsin 4-2 and 7-3.

Roe, 5-9, 180 of Vienna, Va., had two goals in each game. He is second o the team in scoring with 10 goals and 24 assists for 34 points in 34 games. The Los Angeles Kings drafted him.

Among those also nominated for this award was Jacob Cepis of the Gophers. He had both game-winners as the Gophers beat Michigan twice by 5-2 scores.

NODAK'S MARTO EXCELS ON D

Jake Marto, a senior defensman from Grand Forks, N.D., was picked the WCHA's defensive player of the week. he had the game-winning goal and two assists as the Sioux best Bemidji State 5-1 on Sunday to clinch the No. 1 seed in the WCHA playoffs.

Marto was part of a strong North Dakota defense which limited the Beavers to 16 shots each game. The Sioux won 5-2 Saturday. BSU also was just 1-for-7 on power plays.

Marto had six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 35 games.
