An empty building in the Lexington Business Center will be transformed this fall into ... basketball courts.

The 60,000-square-foot building will house seven courts and offices for Minneapolis Select Basketball, which runs youth camps. Howard Pulley Basketball, which focuses on helping high school players, will also use the facilities.

"The sky is the limit with this," said Rene Pulley, executive director for Pulley in St. Paul. "This will be used for a lot of different things."

The project is being led by Richard Coffey, a former player with the Timberwolves and Gophers. The business center has other tenants, including a dance studio and a custom packing company.

Furniture moving

Becker Furniture World is moving from its present location at Burnsville Center to a new location at the Burnsville Crossings shopping center. The move is expected to be completed by October for what is expected to be a 31,000-square foot store. The company also will do external improvements to the Crossings center.

Nominations sought

The Burnsville City Council is seeking nominations for the "Community Builder" award, presented annually to individuals, community groups, and businesses that, through their volunteer or work life, do their best to "build a brighter future for Burnsville." Nominees need not be residents of Burnsville. The deadline is Sept. 3.

Software training

The Burnsville Police Department is sponsoring a training session for pawnbrokers, secondhand-goods dealers and precious metal dealers to learn about new software for their businesses. The training session is Sept. 14 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Burnsville City Council chamber. The idea is to provide businesses with the APSBiz software DVD and help familiarize them with system requirements. The software tracks merchandise, according to police.

The wait is over

At long last, the much anticipated White Castle hamburger restaurant has opened in Apple Valley. The first slider was dispensed Aug. 15 to a man who has been a White Castle fan for more than 65 years. The restaurant is at 15101 Cedar Av., near County Road 42, one of the busiest non-freeway intersections in Minnesota.
