Globe University has acquired Northwest Technical Institute of Eagan and as a result now will offer associate degrees in engineering drafting and design and architectural drafting and design. The programs will be available to students on the Woodbury campus when winter term begins Jan 2.

"We are very excited to start enrolling for these two programs," said Jessica McCabe, director of admissions on the Woodbury campus. "These programs are going to be a fantastic addition to our career-specific degrees."

The school at 8089 Globe Drive also is developing bachelor's-level engineering programs and enhancing its existing technology offerings, it said in a news release.

WOODBURY

Dickey's Barbecue Pit opensBig barbecue sandwiches and rib platters were the fare of choice for diners who stopped by Dickey's Barbecue Pit Monday on its first day of business, said General Manger Kasey Maier.

The Texas-based chain known for its hot pit-smoked meats and big plastic yellow cups has opened in the former Broadway Pizza restaurant in Woodbury Village at 1575 Queens Drive in Woodbury.

It has seating for about 50 people and will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Kids eat free on Sundays, Maier said.

Dickey's will have 10 to 15 hourly employees and managers, Maier said. It also offers free ice cream with every meal and a giant pickle jar in the dining room so "customers can have as many as they can handle," Maier said.

The restaurant also will offer catering services. For more information, call 651-739-1515.

OAKDALE

Five Guys Burgers openFive Guys Burgers began serving its fresh hand-formed burgers and fresh-cut fries cooked in peanut oil on Dec. 16 in a space next to Baja Sol in the Oakdale Village Shopping Center.

The restaurant at 8360 N. 3rd St. allows customers to create burgers to their own taste by picking toppings that can be added to burgers at no additional charge. There are more than 250,000 combinations possible, according to the company's website.

The Oakdale location will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. It is one of three new franchises in Minnesota that have or will open in the next few months, a spokeswoman for the Virginia-based company said.
