While Bernie Sanders was giving a speech at a presidential campaign rally in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, a small green bird flew up on stage and caught his attention.

A few seconds later the interloper hopped up onto his podium, causing mass pandemonium amongst the rally attendees.

Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration.

But as you can see in the video above, the crowd was definitely into it — they cheered and gave the bird a standing ovation.

On Twitter, the obvious pun immediately became a trending hashtag — #BirdieSanders — with hilarious memes taking flight featuring the Democratic candidate and his feathered friends.

Sanders is currently in the Pacific Northwest in advance of the Democratic caucuses in Washington on Saturday, where there is plenty of wildlife to potentially join him on stage.
