Miss the crack of the bat, the crashes into the back wall to grab an amazing catch, the smell of hot dogs and spilled beer? Who knows when baseball will resume, or when the lockout will be resolved, but in the meantime thank goodness there's Bill Meissner and his baseball books. Meissner, a professor emeritus from St. Cloud State University and all-around baseball lover, published a collection of baseball-themed short stories last fall ("Light at the Edge of the Field") and now is back with a collection of baseball-themed essays and photos ("Circling Toward Home").

He'll launch both books at 7 p.m. March 14 at Magers & Quinn Booksellers in Minneapolis in an event they call, of course, a "doubleheader." It's all virtual — pop some popcorn, pop open your favorite beverage, and pop on over to your laptop and tune in. Maybe there'll be a couple of virtual pop flies! As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
