Bill Diedrich: Waypoints vs. icons

July 9, 2008 at 11:46AM

Waypoints are locations that are assigned latitude and longitude. Icons or symbols, depending on the manufacturer, can be used to identify a waypoint or mark a location without lats and longs. If I need a precise location for a small hump or finger, I will use a waypoint. If I want to mark a boat ramp, a reef area or a recently seen muskie, I will use an appropriate icon. GPS units usually will store hundreds of waypoints and provide 30 to 40 icon symbols.

Bill Diedrich is a retired Minnetonka math teacher with a love of fishing electronics.
