Former President Bill Clinton will speak at the University of Minnesota next month about the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Clinton’s appearance the evening of June 9 at Northrop Auditorium, part of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs’ yearlong series of events to commemorate the anniversary, will include his acceptance of the Dean’s Award for Public Leadership.

“We are delighted to present this award to President Clinton, who has often spoken about how his political identity was largely forged during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s,” Eric Schwartz, dean of the Humphrey School, said in a statement.

The awards honor individuals who have contributed to the common good through leadership and service. In late June, Schwartz and the Humphrey School will present additional Public Leadership Awards during an annual gala dinner at the McNamara Alumni Center.

Tickets to Clinton’s appearance will be available starting at noon Tuesday at 1-612-624-2345 or

Organizers said proceeds from ticket sales will support public affairs student scholarships designed to promote diversity and inclusion in the spirit of the Civil Rights Act.
