Big Surge of Summerlike Warmth

April 23, 2009 at 7:30PM

It's coming! We guarantee it. Beginning Friday, temperatures will skyrocketfrom the Midwest to the Northeast, and on Saturday, a broad swath from Missourito New England will record highs in the 80s. When it gets this warm thisquickly, it feels like a full-fledged heat wave though no 90s are expected thistime. The rapid onset of warm weather spells sunburn for many. There is no gettingaround the fact that if you are out mowing the yard for an hour or so your faceand arms will be reddened by the sun. It always happens to me this time ofyear. You'd think I'd learn to use sunscreen by now.

The heat will be transported into the Midwest and Northeast by a broadsouthwesterly flow. This is being made possible by a large northward shift ofthe jet stream.
