Bicyclist struck and killed by motorist in Minneapolis

February 4, 2014 at 7:32AM

A bicyclist was struck by a motorist and killed Monday night in the area of W. Franklin and Garfield Avenues, according to the Minneapolis Police Department

Police say the bicyclist became pinned underneath a van after the vehicle first struck a parked car, then veered up onto the sidewalk and struck the victim.

The Minneapolis Fire Department used equipment to lift the van off of the victim, who died at the scene shortly afterward.

The accident happened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday. The 49-year-old driver of the van was taken into custody. Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The victim's name is not being released at this time.
