A 46-year-old bicyclist was struck by a car and killed at an intersection in Mankato early Wednesday, authorities said.

The collision occurred about 12:40 a.m. at N. 4th and Spring streets, according to police.

David Winters, of Mankato, "was not breathing and unconscious" after he was hit, police said. Lifesaving measures were administered, but Winters died at the scene, police added.

The driver, 21-year-old Terry Lillis, of Mankato, was not hurt and is cooperating with the investigation.

Police say Lillis was heading north on 4th, when Winters rode into the intersection on westbound Spring and was hit.

There are stop signs only for traffic on Spring, said Police Cmdr. Matt DuRose, who added that "Winters' exact location in relation to the intersection is under investigation yet. Once his location is determined, then right of way will be confirmed."

DuRose said there was no indication that Lillis had been drinking. Standard testing will look into whether Winters was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time he was hit.
