Alejandro Borrajo won Stage 5 of the Nature Valley Grand Prix on Saturday, while Tom Zirbel regained the yellow jersey as the overall leader.
Bicycle race heads to finish
Christiaan Kriek and Tommy Nankervis finished second and third on the day. Coulton Hartrich, Heath Blackgrove and Ben Jacques-Maynes completed the eight-man breakaway group.
On the women's side, Emilia Fahlin finished first, just ahead of Loren Rowney. Emily Collins edged Theresa Cliff Ryan for third. Carmen Small finished fifth to retain the yellow leader's jersey.
Saturday's Menomonie Road Race took place in and around Menomonie, Wis. The race concludes Sunday with the Stillwater Criterium.
Etc. The Minnesota Stars FC lost 2-1 at home to the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Martin Nunez scored in the ninth minute for the Stars, and the Rowdies rallied with goals from Tsuyoshi Yoshitake and Keith Savage. Yoshitake evened the match just before halftime, then Savage scored in 87th minute off a Yoshitake pass.
The St. Paul Saints lost 7-6 to the host Sioux Falls Canaries on a walk-off single by Al Quintana. Jim Rapoport went 2-for-3 for the Saints, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
Selections in the baseball draft earlier this month included 129 Northwoods League players or alumni. Two former players were taken in the first round, Tyler Naquin by the Indians and Mitch Haniger by the Brewers. Naquin, the 15th overall selection, played for the Mankato MoonDogs in 2010, and Haniger played for the Green Bay Bullfrogs in 2011. The league has 16 teams in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan and Ontario.
