Better birding: Four things to know

January 8, 2015 at 9:35PM

1 The ethics of birding and bird photography are elusive. Each situation is different. Use your best judgment to prevent harm to the birds.

2 Many birders remain in their vehicles while observing rare birds. Always abide by highway safety standards to avoid accidents.

3 Respect private land. Birders and photographers have been known to trespass while "chasing" rare species.

4 Baiting owls and other birds into photography range is hurtful and unethical by any standard.
