August Schell Brewing Company brews lager beer — and they do it really well. They should. The brewery has been making German-style lagers in New Ulm for more than 150 years. Schell's Pils is anchored in that Germanic tradition, while also embracing a pioneering spirit. When released in 1984, the Bavarian-style pilsner was a palate-pushing brew for a public accustomed to lighter, mass-produced lagers. The recipe has been tweaked since then, but the beer remains true to its roots, with soft pils-malt sweetness cushioning bracing bitterness and the floral, spicy flavors of hops. schellsbrewery.com
