One of the best Bach violinists

The classical circuit is packed with gifted violinists, but Illinois-born Gil Shaham stands out as exceptional. A year ago Shaham released a dashing, irrepressible recording of Bach solo violin sonatas and partitas. He'll bring two of each — including the monumental Chaconne from Partita 2 — to this Sunday afternoon's recital at the Ordway. (3 p.m. Sun., Ordway Music Theater, St. Paul; $32-$76, 651-292-3268 or schubert.org)

Listening for the past

Why do so many classical composers look to the past for inspiration? The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra raises the question with an intriguing program featuring violinist Pekka Kuusisto. The program includes remembrances of things past by composers including Respighi, Prokofiev and Kreisler. Haydn's "Clock Symphony" is also featured, which should extend the SPCO's run of exceptionally fine Haydn performances. (11 a.m. & 8 p.m. Fri., 8 p.m. Sat.; Ordway Concert Hall, St. Paul; 2 p.m. Sun., Bethel University, Arden Hills; $15-$53, 651-291-1144 or thespco.org)

Brassy beer-drinking

Remember Symphony and Suds? Now rebranded "Pint of Music," the Minnesota Orchestra continues its initiative of sending musicians out to Twin Cities taprooms. Next up: A Minnesota Orchestra brass quintet makes a trip to Lakes and Legends Brewing Co. Quaff a glass of something tasty and enjoy the music. (7:30 p.m. Thu., Lakes and Legends Brewing Co., Mpls.; free, minnesotaorchestra.org)

Prime Paganini

Niccolò Paganini was the greatest violinist of the 19th century (or perhaps any century) — plus he was a capable composer to boot. Hear the Italian's sparky First Violin Concerto played by Russian virtuoso Ilya Kaler in a Minnesota Sinfonia program. Also featured are Beethoven's First Symphony and a premiere by Jack Langdon. (7:30 p.m. Sat, Temple of Aaron, St. Paul; 4 p.m. Sun., Temple Israel, Mpls.; free, mnsinfonia.org)

Free Poulenc concert

Poulenc's chamber music is a delight of the classical repertoire. Don't miss the opportunity to hear two of his less familiar pieces — the sonatas for violin and cello — in this free midday recital at the Schubert Club. Violinist Ian Synder and cellist Charles Asch are the soloists. (Noon Thu., Landmark Center, St. Paul; free, schubert.org)
