THE LATEST: The police officer from Litchfield, Minn., who shot and wounded a suspect in that central Minnesota city on Sunday and the man he shot were identified Tuesday by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
SEQUENCE OF EVENTS: Officer Travis Rueckert, a four-year veteran of the Litchfield police, shot Cassidy Loch, 23, of Litchfield, who remained in critical condition Tuesday night at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Rueckert was responding to a 911 disturbance call around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when he encountered Loch, who was leaving the scene in his vehicle. Rueckert opened fire after Loch did not respond to the officer's commands, the BCA statement said. A firearm was recovered near the driver's door of Loch's vehicle.
MORE DETAILS PENDING: The BCA said it will not release further details until its investigation is complete.
In an update Tuesday on Loch's CaringBridge website page, family members wrote that Loch is showing signs of recovery, opening his eyes and making movements. "We know that he is fighting and going to stay strong," the page said.
There was no word Tuesday on whether Loch has been or will be charged.
