INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MINN. - Bail has been set at $1 million for a totem pole carver charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, who died in November after a 700-pound log fell on her at their home near Ray, 18 miles south of International Falls.

Carl Muggli, 49, lived with his wife, Linda, 61, until she died. He then moved to Stockdale, Texas.

Investigators say they found romantic Facebook messages between Carl Muggli and another woman that helped crack the case.

Muggli could return to Texas if he posts the $1 million bail; he could be freed on $500,000 bail if he agrees to remain in Minnesota.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
