GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — Authorities have identified the hiker who was declared dead after being found unconscious along a trail at Grand Canyon National Park.

Authorities say 63-year-old Brice Henri Patricot of Precy-sur-Oise, France, lost consciousness Friday afternoon. He was about a half-mile below the canyon rim on North Kaibab Trail.

Efforts by volunteers and park rangers to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Patricot was in a group of five people that had hiked to Eye of the Needle about 2 miles below the rim. Three of the individuals continued on, while Patricot and his wife decided to return to the trailhead.

An investigation is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.
