A 71-year-old man was killed Monday when his pickup truck broke through a guardrail on Interstate 35 and went into a river in Steele County.

He was driving south on I-35 near the Straight River rest area when his Toyota Tundra veered off the roadway south of Owatonna, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

The truck was under water when emergency personnel arrived.

The man, of New Richland, was dead at the scene.
