Australia Flood Threat Persists

January 27, 2010 at 8:25PM

The threat of excessive rain and flooding will persist through at leastSaturday, mostly over Queensland, as Tropical Cyclone Olga has reformed amidsta broad swath of showers and thunderstorms near the coast of northernAustralia.Over the one to two few days, Olga will drift to the southeast, potentiallybecoming a strong cyclone over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. However, Olgawill stay mostly over land, its strength being much restricted, with asoutheastward over inland Queensland forecast for the weekend.

Rain heavy enough to spark flooding will erupt locally over a broad corridorfrom the shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria south and east to the centralQueensland coast. Excessive rain will thus pose a threat life and personalproperty as well as agriculture output in this area.

The heavy rain threat could translate farther south in eastern Australia onSaturday and Sunday.
