A 23-year-old man crashed his ATV early Saturday in rural Sherburne County and died, authorities said Sunday.

The wreck occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. on County Road 43 at 176th Street in Big Lake Township, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Killed was Travis J. Mahaffey, the medical examiner said. Mahaffey was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale after the crash and died about 4 hours later.

Authorities have yet to reveal the circumstances leading to Mahaffey's death.

The examiner's office listed Mahaffey's city of residence as Minot, N.D. He attended Big Lake High School and graduated in 2010.
