Nature lovers now can explore the waters of Three Rivers Park District in a whole new light.

Park recreation leaders are leading nighttime canoe excursions during the spring and summer's full moons through August. The program, "Canoe When the Moon is Full," will be offered at six parks, ranging from Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove to Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park in New Prague.

Three Rivers hosts "full moon" events year-round. This year, parks staff decided to turn the events during the summer into paddling adventures.

"Being out at night under the full moon gives the whole experience a different feel," said Three Rivers media relations specialist Tom Knisely.

"It's a great way to discover the beauty and splendor of the parks at night. You can hear and see things at night you don't during the day."

The low-cost program — it's $8-9 per person with a discount for groups of four or more — includes use of all the equipment and instruction by trained leaders. Participants must be at least 5 years old, and anyone 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Under an April moon

The Krocak family of Shakopee glided out onto Cleary Lake in Prior Lake during April's full moon. A short history and paddling lesson preceded the canoe launch at sunset.

Outdoor recreational specialists McKayla Boelter and Tashina Lahr loosely guided the evening of paddling.

Pelicans, geese and other wildlife shared the lake with the canoe group, led by two guides.
