Devo: The classic look The concert started 45 minutes late. And the only band on the bill played a mere 75 minutes. But do you think anybody was complaining about Devo's performance Saturday night at the Minnesota Zoo? Heck, no. It was a wildly entertaining concert before a standing-room-only crowd. Devo had industrial outfits, masks, helmets, a slew of synthesizers, plenty of guitars, cool videos, great humor, wonderful energy and silly fun. And there was even a message if you cared to think about it. Making their first Twin Cities appearance since 1988, the ageless Ohio hipsters came out wearing partial masks and matching light gray track suits. It was all loopyness and new-wave synth loops. As the set moved on, the five Devo dudes (only drummer Jeff Friedl is not from the mid-'70 to-mid-80s heyday) leaned more on punkish guitars (The careening "Uncontrollable Urge" and the speedo "Mongoloid" were highlights.) Devo played new material from this year's "Something for Everybody" (their first album in 20 years) and these tunes fit seamlessly with their older stuff. On the first true headline concert of their summer tour (the band had played at a Los Angeles radio show and a post-horse-race concert at a Hollywood track), the guys whipped through costume changes (sometimes in front of the fans' eyes). During "Uncontrolllable Urge," frontman Mark Mothersbaugh tore away at the cheap yellow Devo suits that he and his bandmates were wearing. So they went on to perform in black T-shirts, gym shorts, knee-high stockings and black-and-white kneepads. Considering the hot and humid weather, the final outfit was probably the most comfortable for the Devo guys, save for Motherbaugh who dressed up as Booji Boy for the encore "Beautiful World." Of course, Devo wore their classic helmets (that look like upside down flower pots) for a while. They were blue, not red this time. And many fans shelled out $15 for their own, which they wore throughout the show. As Booji Boy, Mothersbaugh pointed out that this was the first time Devo had ever played at a zoo. "Don't you think all the animals in the zoo deserve as much freedom as you do? I want you to each liberate one animal. Birds will be easy. Let the giraffes in Minnesota live free. If those animals could talk, you know what they'd say: 'It's a beautiful world.'" Here is what Devo played: Don't Shoot/ Peek a Boo/ What We Do/ Going Under/ Fresh/ Girl U Want/ Whip It/ Planet Earth/ Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)/ Secret Agent Man (Johnny Rivers)/ Uncontrollable Urge/ Mongoloid/ Are We Not Men?/ Smart Patrol, Mr DNA/ Gates of Steel/ ENCORE Freedom of Choice/ Beautiful World
