AT A GLANCE

• Smith Lake is one of 47 "wildlife lakes" designated by the DNR, which allows the agency to manipulate water levels and restrict motors. "That means less disturbance to waterfowl, which keeps them here longer," said Fred Bengston, DNR area wildlife manager. Seven lakes have been added since 2009. For a list and a map, see www.startribune.com/a1759.

• Levels of many other shallow lakes are being manipulated to improve water quality and wildlife habitat. Last year, the DNR did draw-downs on 92 lakes. Lake Christina, at 4,000 acres, is the largest.

• Smith Lake is part of Ducks Unlimited Living Lakes Initiative to restore shallow lakes in Minnesota and Iowa. For more information, www.startribune.com/a1758.
