As shocking and sad events have unfolded across the United States in recent days — two of them notably in the Twin Cites and Dallas — athletes have used social media as platforms for expression of personal messages and beliefs.

While there will always be a segment of fandom that wants these players to #sticktosports — we hear it in the media, too, if we dare to deviate from the sporting script — there are others (myself included) who find it refreshing when athletes lend a voice. It's not because what they have to say is any more important than the rest of us, but rather that it reminds us that even as we put them on pedestals for their athletic gifts, they are just fragile humans at heart like everyone else.

As such, I'll leave you with a few tweets offered last night by Twins pitcher Trevor May. With the Twins coming from Minneapolis as tensions mount here and playing the Rangers in Texas on Thursday, the same night five Dallas police officers were killed, bigger things than baseball are clearly on his mind.
