Arts groups cutting back
In recent weeks, large Twin Cities arts organizations have responded to economic distress with these measures:
MINNESOTA ORCHESTRA
• Cut fiscal 2009-10 budget by 7 percent
• Music director Osmo Vänskä takes 10 percent pay cut
• Senior staff members take 5 percent cuts
• Eliminate four full-time administrative jobs
Guthrie Theater
• Cut fiscal 2010 budget by 14 percent
• Director Joe Dowling takes 10 percent pay cut
• Senior managers take 5 percent cuts
• Wage freezes and furloughs
MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ARTS
• Cut staff and fiscal 2010 budget by 6 percent
• Director Kaywin Feldman takes 10 percent pay cut
ST. PAUL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
• Trimmed staff by 17 percent
• Cut senior managers' pay by 10 percent
MINNESOTA OPERA
• Salaries freezes
• Eliminated contributions to pension and 401(k) plans
WALKER ART CENTER
• Cut fiscal 2010 budget 9 percent
• Director Olga Viso takes 6 percent reduction this year, 7 percent next year
• Wage freezes and five-day furlough and wage freeze
• Leaving vacant positions unfilled
CHILDREN'S THEATRE COMPANY
• Cut fiscal 2010 budget by 14 percent
• Salary cuts of as much as 10 percent for artistic director Peter Brosius and managing director Gabriella Calicchio
• Wage freezes for nonunion staff
• Staff reductions
