Potato Chips

Taking a dip this 4th of July

July 4, 2010 at 2:49PM

We were at a birthday party recently and little Vivian pulled a ripple chip out of a bowl and said. "Mommy what's this?"

I was taken aback. Should I be proud that she doesn't know what a potato chip is or not?

We make attempts at modeling good eating behavior at home, but I also know myself too well regarding chips.

Do you remember that old slogan "Bet you can't eat just one?"

They are right.

I can't.

So I don't have them around the house.

But wow, aren't they good with some thick French onion dip?

Or I love a good thick Salt & Vinegar kettle chip in all it's salty sour goodness.

……..sorry, I just drifted off there for a moment.

There needs to be a balance. If you deprive kids of all the fun will they go overboard when given the opportunity? We all probably remember some kid at a slumber party who tore into the stash of the Cap'n Crunch because their parents never let them have anything other than non-sugar twiggy fibery cardboard o"s cereal for breakfast.

Doesn't abstinence makes the heart go wander...right into a bag of junk food? I know healthy eating is what's best for the kids. I am proud of the fact that they reach for carrot sticks and have even been know to say. "Yum broccoli!" when we set it down on the table. But I think now is a good time to introduce Vivian to the potato chip. Moderation and on occasion. I think 4th of July is a great occasion don't you? Now, you'll have to excuse me. I think I need to go get bag of chips. Happy 4th of July weekend all!
