Ice Box the favorite for Belmont Stakes

June 3, 2010 at 2:46AM

Kentucky Derby runner-up Ice Box is the favorite at 3-1 in the morning line among the 12 contenders in the 142nd Belmont Stakes, the longest and final leg of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown.

Neither Derby winner Super Saver nor Preakness Stakes winner Lookin at Lucky entered the 1 1/2-race Belmont. Ice Box, with Jose Lezcano aboard, will start from the sixth post position Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

First Dude, second in the Preakness, will leave from the 11th post at 7-2, and Fly Down, running from the fifth gate, was given 9-2 odds. The odds were set at the post-position draw Wednesday.

Ice Box and Fly Down are trained by Nick Zito and based at Belmont.

• Richard Migliore, known for overcoming terrible injuries as much as for his skill as a jockey, retired after a 30-year career. Migliore, 46, never won a Triple Crown race, but he rode 4,450 winners.

Ideas aplenty at forum NFL doctors, trainers and players spent much of Wednesday in Washington discussing football and brain injuries. Their conclusion: They've still got a lot to learn.

"The fairly unanimous feeling today was that we needed new studies," said Dr. Constantine Lyketsos of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Doctors discussed the possibility of putting a transmitter in the helmet of every player -- to record every major and minor blow and gauge the cumulative effect.
