East staying unsettled to end the weekend

May 22, 2010 at 7:25PM

Showers and thunderstorms that started the weekend across most of the EasternSeaboard will linger into Sunday. Interfering with outdoor activities will bethe main threat of the unsettled weather.Showers on Sunday will occur from Syracuse, N.Y., to Washington, D.C., and NewYork City. Thunderstorms will rumble from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Richmond, Va., toSavannah, Ga.

No widespread flash flooding or severe weather is expected on Sunday. Theshowers and thunderstorms, however, threaten to put a damper on any outdooractivities.

Remember that any thunderstorm is capable of sparking potentially deadlylightning regardless of its severity. If you hear thunder, seek shelterimmediately since you are close enough to get struck.

A storm sliding to the south will trigger Sunday's showers and thunderstorms. Astrong area of high pressure will limit the storm's eastward progress, allowingeastern New England to stay dry.

Drier weather will return to most of the Northeast on Monday as the storm sinksfarther south and brings more numerous thunderstorms to the Southeast.

Additional storminess in the Southeast next week could come from a storm thatis being monitored for at least partial tropical development.
