Height of Dry Season at Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Tuesday's deadly Haitian earthquake coincides with the height of the winter dryseason at the stricken capital city of Port-au-Prince.On average, only three days each in both December and January have measurablerainfall. And the average amount throughout January is about 1.3 inches, or 32mm.

The dry season normally lasts through February into March, then rainfall risessharply through April to a peak of 8.6 inches, or 210 mm, throughout the monthof May. Measurable rain normally falls on five days in February, but thisclimbs to 11 days in April and 13 days in May.

The normal average temperature in January would be about 81 F, or 27 C, withthe normal high being 87 F, or 30.5 C. The highest ever registered in Januarywas about 97 F, or 36.0 C.

During January, nights are normally rather warm, about 68 F, or 20 C, onaverage, with the lowest known being about 59 F, or 15.0 C.
