A view of Kilimanjaro, near Moshi, Tanzania

Dick Anderson and I live in St. Paul.
This is in response to your email of March 2 regarding my photo of Mt. Kilimanjaro. I took the photo from the campus of Mwenge University where I lived and worked as a Peace Corps volunteer. The school is located on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It was taken in the evening just as the sun was setting. I took a number of different shots to get the exposure I wanted and when I liked the results I waited until the bird flew into the shot. I am not a bird watch

The Traveler: Dick Anderson of St. Paul.

The scene: Mount Kilimanjaro peeks out from the clouds at sunset.

destination details: Anderson lived and worked as a Peace Corps volunteer at Mwenge University, near Moshi, Tanzania, in 2007. More than a decade ago, "the people who lived on the mountain could already see the glaciers on the top were rapidly retreating," he wrote in an e-mail.

The place: "Tanzania is a wonderful place. Not only does it have the world's largest free-standing mountain (Kilimanjaro) but it is also home to the legendary Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Zanzibar Archipelago, wonderful people and much, much more. People ask me if I climbed Kilimanjaro, and I usually reply that 'No, I did something much better. I lived on Kilimanjaro,' " Anderson wrote.

Getting the shot: Anderson used a Canon Powershot G6. He took several frames until he found the exposure that looked best, then waited for the bird to fly into the shot. "I am not a bird watcher, but I was fascinated by the huge number of exotic species that showed up around Kilimanjaro," he wrote.
