Holding down the fort

Former attorney Peter Moffat, whose BBC drama "Criminal Justice" inspired HBO's "The Night Of," makes a case for the British Royal Military Police in "The Last Post," one of the few new series debuting during the holiday week. The six-part story spotlights English officers battling snipers and heatstroke while occupying current-day Yemen in the mid-60s. Base life can be deadly dull, but Moffat breaks the monotony with some sweaty sex scenes.

Gifts from across the pond

Sherlock Holmes doesn't have a Christmas case to solve this year, but those who want a touch of British drama to celebrate the holiday will have Peter Capaldi's last outing as the Doctor in "Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time" (8 p.m. Mon., BBC America) and "Call the Midwife Christmas Special," (8 p.m. Mon., TPT, Ch. 2). Both promise to be more scrumptious than figgy pudding.

Get on your feet

Having Lionel Richie and Gloria Estefan as part of the "40th Annual Kennedy Center Honors" assures viewers of some great singalong moments — Leona Lewis somehow makes "All Night Long" tolerable again — but the real highlight is the induction of dancer/choreographer Carmen de Lavallade, courtesy of some outstanding ballerinas and singers.

8 p.m. Tue., WCCO, Ch. 4
