Letter of the Day: The real Michelle Obama: Clothes don't make this woman

April 7, 2009 at 11:01PM

Dear America: Please pay attention to Michelle Obama even if she chooses to wear T-shirts and jeans. She has more to offer us than her fashion sense. While I do find myself considering whether to wear my hemline just below or above my knees, I am more eager to watch Michelle for signs of how to wear my life.

I briefly met Michelle last fall. I remember her as an articulate and generous person. I recall feeling that our brief conversation gave me the extra fuel I needed to keep working for my community and family.

Just as her words energized me then, Michelle can now give all of us new energy to persevere when we find ourselves with less money or at a dead end. Her words and actions can show us how to meet life's challenges with determination, grace and a smile.

With her experience as a lawyer and organizing volunteers, it will be interesting to watch Michelle pursue her initiatives as First Lady with military families, working women and national service volunteers. Perhaps Michelle's fashion sense is part of her secret to success. Still, finding success in life is challenging, and I am inspired by the depth our new First Lady brings to Washington.

Next time you read an article about Michelle, skim over the photo and delve into the details of what she said or did. Look to Michelle's words and heart for inspiration and not to her clothes.
