A 19-year-old Hibbing man has pleaded guilty to murdering his roommate and burning the body in an abandoned mine on the Iron Range.

Dylan B. Gilbertson entered his plea Friday to second-degree murder in St. Louis County District Court for stabbing 20-year-old Jaysen Greenwood, then leaving his burned body in a ditch near the property line of Mott Pit.

Gilbertson remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail ahead of sentencing on Dec. 14. He could receive a term of 35 years.

Greenwood, also of Hibbing, was found late in the morning on May 19 by someone walking along the former iron ore mine, southwest of Mountain Iron, Minn. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified him through his fingerprints.

Investigators believe Greenwood died less than 24 hours before being discovered. A partial knife blade remained in Greenwood's chest.

A 16-year-old female roommate told authorities that the men had been fighting because Gilbertson accused Greenwood of stealing electronics from him, according to the court case file.
