Ryder Cup captain's picks

Davis Love III on Monday announced three of his four captain's picks for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. They join automatic qualifiers Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Brandt Snedeker, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker. One more pick will be made Sept. 25 before Ryder Cup week kicks off the next day at Hazeltine National in Chaska. Here is a closer look at Love's picks:

Rickie Fowler

Age: 27

Ryder Cup experience (record): two teams (0-3-5)

Road to Hazeltine: Missed the cut in first two majors (including an opening-round 80 at Augusta) but remains immensely popular and a top ball-striker. Has collected eight top 10s. Knocked out of Fed Ex Cup playoffs Sunday.

J.B. Holmes

Age: 34

Ryder Cup experience: one team (2-0-1)

Road to Hazeltine: Picked up a pair of top-five finishes in the majors (Masters and British Open), which was enough to offset three straight missed cuts entering the Fed Ex Cup playoffs. Was a member of winning 2008 Ryder Cup team at Valhalla. His length off the tee will be a major advantage.

Matt Kuchar

Age: 38

Ryder Cup experience: three teams (4-5-2)

Road to Hazeltine: Has seven top 10s since May, including a tie for fourth at the BMW last weekend and a bronze medal in the Rio Olympics. Reputation and veteran status (three Ryder Cup teams, three Presidents Cup teams and Olympics) are a plus.
